Sample of the first Atlantic telegraph cable attempt, partly laid August 1857. The rings bear the inscriptions “A.T. Coy. Cable 1857” and
“Newall & Co. Manufacturers Birkenhead”.
It is understood that the core was manufactured by the Gutta Percha Co., Newall being the manufacturer of the armour.
